That depends on several different factors including the substrate, the speed of your production line and other factors.

Materials absorb and react to laser energy very differently. It’s the material characteristics which dictate which laser will be most compatible and produce the best results. Different materials can require different types of lasers.

This is why every laser project begins in the Sample Lab where the type of material is evaluated. As part of this evaluation, a Sample Lab Report is produced. This report specifies the laser configuration best suited for both the material and application.

Domino Dx-Series CO2 Laser Marker

For flexible films in industries as diverse as Food Labels, Beverage, Life Sciences and more, Domino offers a CO2 laser option that has been successfully deployed all over the world.

Our Dx-Series CO2 laser marking machines have been installed in factories of all sizes, from single-line facilities to multi-line facilities for multinational corporations. We offer industrial CO2 laser marking machines in 20 watt, 30 watt and 60 watt varieties.

What are CO2 Laser Markers Used For?

CO2 laser markers are typically utilized for scribing both human and machine-readable codes into flexible materials as opposed to the harder metals and alloys where fiber lasers are typically deployed. CO2 lasers are also utilized for more translucent materials such as glass.

While both lasers are efficient, the Dx-Series laser can tackle even complex coding requirements, supporting compliance to GS1 standards and moving to larger, more complex 2D machine-readable code formats, including QR codes powered by GS1.

Unlike CO2 lasers, fiber lasers are more equipped for scribing metallic and harder surfaces than the flexible films that both UV and CO2 lasers specialize in.

Fiber laser beams are more readily absorbed by metal instead of reflected. Plus, you just as capable of etching small legible characters, MRCs and more. Plus, fiber lasers are able to do so in challenging, high-humidity factory environments.

That said, what you do lose compared to industrial inkjets is that lasers must be precisely placed next to the substrate.

Domino U-Series UV Laser Marker

Meet the latest addition to the Domino family of laser marking machines - the U-Series UV laser. UV lasers are capable of marking plastic materials such as flexible films, polypropylene and more.

While fiber lasers are also capable of marking plastics, the UV is set apart thanks to its ability to create contrast on both light and dark-colored plastic substrates - all on the same production line.
